Essential Job Functions 

  • Assist the Camp Director with administration and communication logistics before, during, and after each camp session 

  • Answer parent inquiries and send out transportation emails 

  • Collect, organize, and help distribute camper and staff mail and manage store accounts 

  • Assist with cabin assignments, first and last-day logistics, and session cleanup 

  • Assist with the supervision of summer staff and day-to-day logistics and operations 

  • Direct supervision of unit coordinators and other leadership staff 

  • Acting director when camp/program director is off-site 

  • Support staff with general needs, inquiries, and facilitation of programs 

  • Lead daily meetings with staff and help supervise all camp and staff schedules and program operations 

Training and Development 

  • Support staff with team building, and conflict resolution, and assist with staff evaluations and feedback 

  • Help create records and documentation for training, facilitation, and programs

  • Participate in and help facilitate staff training at the beginning of and throughout the summer

Qualifications ​

  • Must be 21+ years of age

  • Minimum 1-year supervisory experience and leading groups 

  • Experience working in customer service or a related field 

  • Comfort with multi-tasking and making decisions in a leadership position 

  • Experience with problem-solving in a fast-paced working environment 

  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable 

  • Strong communication, written, and public speaking skills 

  • Ability to practice self-care and maintain a sense of humor 

  • Organized and consistent 

  • Experience working in summer camps or similar outdoor education settings 

  • Experience with creating schedules, running meetings, and delivering feedback 

  • Must be First Aid/CPR certified, lifeguard certification preferred but not required

Medical Officer

Qualifications:

  • Be at least 21 years of age and possess the maturity and skills needed to successfully fulfill the requirements of the position.

  • Must have all of the qualifications as required by the State of Michigan, demonstrated health or nurse experience is required.

  • Has a nursing or medical degree.

  • Have a sincere desire to work with youth from all backgrounds.

  • Willing to actively pursue and fulfill the goals and mission of VFW Camp Trotter for Children.

Health Officer Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the total health program and follow all procedures.

  • Screen all campers as they arrive at camp, and check for sickness, recent illness and prior injuries, possible abuse, or medical conditions.

  • Maintain an up-to-date and accurate log of all health-related incidents and procedures.

  • Collect all camper and staff medications, dispensing medications at meals and bedtime or according to medication directions.

  • Obtain a health status and emergency contact form from each staff member and camper, and keep these forms organized and readily available for emergencies.

  • Care for all health concerns and incidents as much as possible and determine when emergency or hospital care is necessary.

  • Keep an inventory of health center supplies and needs. Be certain that the camp is always stocked with all necessary equipment/ medications as per state regulations.

  • Prepare first aid kits for program areas, such as cabins and the waterfront that comply with state camp licensing codes.

  • Inform all staff, during staff training and ongoing through summer about the camp’s health policies, how to ensure safety throughout camp, and how to seek care for a health-related incident or emergency.

  • Inform staff as necessary regarding the medical conditions or allergies of their campers. This must be done always with confidentiality in mind.

  • Post first aid and CPR information in general areas to assist staff with emergencies.

  • Contact local doctors or hospitals as needed to receive information or secure appointments for campers or staff.

  • Be available and ready for emergencies by being at the location of the majority of campers during activities.

  • Be “on-call” via camp cell phone at all times during camp.

  • In partnership with the Camp Director, call parents as seen fit regarding medical issues or because a child may need to go home due to illness.

  • Complete “clean cabin checks” daily and provide cabins with their scores at mealtimes; participate in a reward for the cleanest cabin each week.

Camp Responsibilities:

  • Attend planned activities, including staff training and staff meetings, and follow the daily schedule.

  • Take every effort to build and nurture a sense of community and understanding among all staff members.

  • Report to the Camp Director any concerns about a camper’s health, safety, or well-being.

  • Participate in all camp activities with campers and staff when not treating campers.

  • Be willing to assist with camp upkeep and other cleaning duties as requested.

  • Do a thorough cleaning of the infirmary throughout and at the end of each session.

  • Serve as an active team member to the Camp Trotter staff and fulfill other duties as assigned and requested by the Camp Director or Assistant Director.

General Responsibilities: 

  • Manages all kitchen operations in preparation of food, giving attention to the economy of operation, cleanliness, meal promptness, and well-being of campers, staff, and occasional camp guests. 

  • Supervises helpers. 

Specific Responsibilities: 

  • Prepares dining hall for opening and closing of camp. 

  • Together with the Camp Committee and Camp Director, order supplies and secure adequate kitchen staff. 

  • Prepare and cook food according to a previously planned menu. 

  • Maintains an adequate inventory of food and supplies. 

  • Maintains records as may be required and prepares related reports. 

  • Supervises cleaning of the work area, equipment, and utensils. 

  • Supervises serving of food and use of leftovers. 

  • Gives a list of additional supplies needed to the Director for them to purchase.

Kitchen Staff

  • Aid in the preparation, serving, and clean up of all meals and snacks. 

  • Assist in the preparation of food according to a previously planned menu. 

  • Assist in maintaining inventory of food and supplies.

    • Dishes

    • Serving areas

    • Dining tables

    • Flooring

  • Willingness to reside at summer camp for entire camp period

  • Applicant must be at least 21 years old and either a college graduate or military veteran

Essential Job Functions:

  • Perform scheduled and random checks in designated areas throughout the facility to check for any security breaches or concerns.

  • Coordinate with the Camp Director to ensure that all visitors are properly documented and visitor identification.

  • Coordinate with the Camp Director to ensure all vendors are authorized to be on the property.

  • Patrol the perimeter of the property, as well as interior buildings during assigned times.

  • Coordinate with local law enforcement on an as-needed basis to keep apprised of any local threats or concerns.

  • Coordinate with local law enforcement during emergency situations, act as point of contact between the organization and local law-enforcement during these times.

  • Patrol bunk areas during overnight hours to ensure campers remain in their assigned living quarter.

  • Present security protocols and procedures to all staff members and campers at the beginning of each session and offer refreshers throughout the season.

  • Coordinate all security-related drills, exercises and training.

  • Ensure security and safety to all people and property on the property during the season.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor outdoor activities or sports for groups of campers

  • Lead recreational and educational activities (such as swimming, nature walks, or crafting)

  • Escort and oversee children

  • Maintaining cleanliness of equipment (like cabins, grounds, and staff bathrooms)

  • Resolve occasional fights between children and address behavioral issues with the help of other counselors and staff.

  • Make sure all safety rules are followed

  • Must have satisfactorily completed training and certification requirements for water safety instructor, advanced lifesaver, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation as set forth by the American National Red Cross. 

  • High moral character and integrity. 

  • Must be dependable. 

  • Ability to make wise decisions and acts quickly. 

  • Get along well with others and speak and act with authority. 

  • Careful and concerned about doing a good job, keeping rules, and the safety of all under his or her care. 

  • Good physical condition. 

General Responsibilities: 

  • Oversee the storage of the waterfront equipment before camp opens and when camp closes. 

  • Inspect all waterfront equipment, especially lifesaving equipment on a daily basis. 

  • Oversee care and use of all waterfront equipment. 

  • Train aquatic observers in basic water safety and rescue course as set forth by the American Red Cross. 

  • Direct aquatic activities and lifeguards. 

  • Enforce rules for swimming and boating. 

  • Follow all state requirements and regulations pertaining to aquatic activities for children's camps. 

  • Be alert and run a safe aquatics program.

Maintenance/Janitor

Qualifications: 

  • At least 18 years or older

  • High School Diploma, GED, or Equivalent

  • High moral character. 

  • Able to work with others and take directives. 

  • Be in good physical health. 

  • Must have mechanical ability and prior experience in repairing and up keep of buildings and equipment. 

General Responsibilities:

  • Make minor repairs on facilities and equipment. 

  • Oversee grooming of grounds, mowing grass, trimming, raking, keep grounds neat and clean. 

  • Work in cooperation with the Director in keeping buildings and grounds in good order without interfering with the camping program. 

  • Clean dining room - sweep and mop. 

  • Clean both boys and girls bathrooms including stools, sinks, and shower stalls.

  • Sweep and mop staff bathrooms. 

  • Make sure there is adequate supplies in all bathrooms. 

  • Keep the basement floor clean and all empty boxes broken down and put in the dumpster. 

  • Empty all wastebaskets in the dining hall, kitchen, and bathrooms. Put in fresh bags and tie all bags at the top and throw them in the dumpster. 

  • Sweep down basement steps from dining hall to basement. 

  • Keep all trash and papers picked up around the dumpster. Keep them packed down and dumpster tops closed. 

  • Help to put food in the basement when food deliveries are made. 

  • Keep the refrigerator room swept and mopped. 

  • Help the maintenance man empty all trash barrels around camp. 

  • Any other duties as may be required.
